Family Center

The mission of the Howard Area Family Center Campus is to nurture children through home and center-based educational programming, focusing on family and community relationships in Rogers Park. The Family Center Campus is comprised of two newly renovated buildings located at 7510 and 7500 N. Ashland. Our program options provide high-quality, affordable early childhood services to over 250 children and their families.

Early Childhood Education Program

The Sheila Reynolds Berner Family Center houses our full-day early childhood program for infants, toddlers and preschoolers. We offer Head Start, Early Head Start and State Pre-Kindergarten programs. We are also accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Our state-of-the-art facility serves a total of 128 children birth to five. We are committed to providing young children with the highest quality care and education in order to best promote their social, emotional, language, cognitive and physical development. Parents pay a fee based on family size and income. The facility operates year-round, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 am until 6:00 pm.

Home Visiting Program

Located next door are staff offices for our intensive Home Visiting Program, which serves 125 children under age three, their families and pregnant women. Through weekly home visits, family support workers assist parents to achieve goals related to family stability and the health and well being of their young children.  Mothers and fathers increase their ability to engage in positive parent-child interaction and develop stronger, more loving bonds with their children. In addition to home visits, parents are invited to participate in parent groups, field trips and other special events.

Program Highlights

  • All families enrolled in our Home Visiting option receive a home safety assessment.
  • All families participating in the homevisiting program have the opportunity to consult with a certified car seat technician to learn about safe car seat installation and child car safety.
  • Extensive parent involvement includes a Parent Policy Council as well as regular meetings and educational workshops.
  • A full time Registered Nurse ensures that all children are in compliance with the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended child health visit schedule, immunization schedule, health screenings, oral health visits and nutrition assessments.
